The Château Clément or "Châtaigneraie" (Chestnut Grove) in Vals-les-Bains was a state prison under Vichy. Among other prisoners, Georges Mandel and Paul Renaud starting on April 30, 1941. They were held there till November 15, 1941. The institution continued to function until October 24, 1941, when it went back to the Grand Baths Hotel to take in arriving prisoners in numbers too large for the Châtaigneraie. When the summer tourist season arrived, the institution was once again transferred to the Châtaigneraie, and finally to the Vivarais Hotel on May 21, 1942.
