Right from 1940, the community of the Abbey of Notre Dame des Dombes ave support to the Resistance, by hiding 700 tons of military equipment, and ceaselessly providing cover for recalcitrant Frenchmen, Jews and foreigners of every class and whatever condition. Two monks were killed, Gabriel Curis, Father Bernard in the community, was deported to Buchenwald and died on April 11, 144, at Bergen Belsen. The Trappist Notre Dame des Dombes monastery was decorated in 1946 with the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre with one palm-frond.
