Vic-sur-Cère

Site historique

Near the chateau at Olmet there used to be a museum devoted to Colonel de la Roque. The founder of the Croix de Feu and of the Parti Social Français, François de la Roque was arrested and deported by the Germans in 1943 for actions of resistance. However, the ambiguous position of the Croix de Feu in relation to the far-right parties in the 1930s - the Vichy government, for example, took as its own the slogan Work Family Fatherland which had been that of de la Roque's Parti Social Français - delayed recognition of de la Roque's acts of resistance. Inside the chateau there is also a monument to Jean Mermoz, the aviator lost in 1936.
