"March 1, 1944, Never Forget That Day:
On that day, the Gestapo and German soldiers trying to find maquis that were not at their HQ in Lespinasse, turned to Volvic and invaded the Hotel du Commerce, where the owners, the Martinon family, regularly lodged resistants with the Auvergne Free Corps.
Three of them, who were getting ready to go on a mission, made their escape by shooting at the Gestapo chief, who was killed.
The reprisals were terrible:
The hotel was burned, and hostages wounded.
