Plaque commémorative
The headquarters of the Office of Jewish Social Works was at 12 rue Saint-Catherine. It was an offshoot of the General Union of Israelites in France, which was created by Vichy in 1941. It undertook clandestine action to rescue Jews, in particular through the Rescue the Children organization. When the Gestapo struck on February 9, 1943, the staff and visitors were arrested and deported. Eighty-six people were rounded up; two escaped, 84 were sent to Drancy, and 80 deported: of those, three survived.
