Plaque in memory of the volunteers of the Défense Passive in Lyon. The expression Passive Defense refers to the protection of populations in wartime, and consists in particular of protective measures in case of bombings. A defense organization is implemented to limit the risks inherent in bombings: identifying potential shelters, informing the population, rebuilding damaged structures, clearing wreckage, rescues, etc.

In Rhône and especially in Lyon, the Défense Passive was mostly made up of voluteers, who saved large numbers of lives, but also paid dearly. During the bombing raids of May 26, 1944, as well as during the liberation of Lyon, numbers of rescuers and Défense Passive volunteers died while coming to the aid of the population. This plaque pays homage to them.
